Building Philanthropic Capacity from the Ground Up

The Challenge
A mid-sized nonprofit focused on affordable housing and supportive services relied almost entirely on government contracts and developer fees. With no formal fundraising program, limited board engagement, and an overstretched leadership team, the organization needed a clear roadmap to strengthen financial sustainability and expand its impact.
Our Approach
Ethos in Action began by conducting a comprehensive landscape analysis—researching peer organizations, identifying successful growth models, and analyzing where similar nonprofits were securing funding. This became a strategic roadmap that clarified priorities and guided decision-making.
The organization then engaged us to design and implement its first grants strategy, including funder messaging, prospect research, and staff training in outreach, networking, and opportunity identification. We also provided leadership coaching to support the organization's evolution into a more robust social services provider.
To help build long-term philanthropic capacity, we advised on board development and supported the recruitment of new members aligned with the organization's fundraising and programmatic goals.
The Impact
Within six months, the organization secured several new philanthropic gifts from prominent private LA foundations, recruited two new board members with strong fundraising and social services expertise, and took meaningful steps toward diversifying its revenue stream. Leadership and staff now operate with greater confidence, a clearer strategy, and a growing culture of philanthropy across the organization.
